How a ‘Drinkable Book’ is Solving Issues of Water Contamination

Okay, okay, so you can’t actually drink a book – that would be one step too far into the future – but a new innovation that’s being branded the ‘drinkable book’ is providing a solution for the 663 million people across the world who still don’t have access to clean and safe drinking water.

We’re looking forward to the day when everybody on earth has access to one of our most fundamental needs – water – so every step towards this goal is a step in the right direction.

What is the ‘Drinkable Book’?

Innovated by Theresa Dankovich as part of a doctorate in chemistry, each page of the book is made of paper specially designed to purify water; users slide a sheet of paper into the book’s tray and pour water over the top, which then collects in a second tray underneath.

Each page is also printed with an educational message about the importance of using the paper rather than drinking the water directly from its source. Printed in both English and Swahili, the hope is that the book could simultaneously share important information with the people who need it most, and simultaneously offer a solution to their problem.

So How Does it Work?

Here’s where the technical details come in – as you’ve probably already guessed by now, the pages contained within these special books aren’t exactly made of your standard A4 sheet of paper. Instead, it contains bacteria killing silver and copper nanoparticles which turn it into a filter.

Under lab conditions, these filters can kill an impressive 99.9999% of the bacteria in the water, and even if it doesn’t reach quite those figures in practice the results could be life changing for many people.

When Will People Start Benefiting From It?

Dankovich has teamed up with a non-profit organisation called WATERisLIFE to start making the dream of freshening up the world’s water supplies a reality. At the moment the project is still in the early stages, and the team are looking for more funding to start producing more of their books.

Each sheet of paper is incredibly cheap to produce, but as they are still currently making the paper by hand with very small numbers of staff, it will take some time before they can start reaching the millions of people that they hope to help. Still, with such a clear vision and a solid plan, we’re sure that they’ll manage to reach their goal!
